Begin your discovery of Brisbane by exploring the sights, sounds and attractions of the city centre and the inner-city, both just minutes away from QUT’s Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses. Art and Culture Great Outdoors Nightlife Shopping Sport Art and Culture The Goodwill bridge, a pedestrian and cycle bridge, links QUT’s Gardens Point campus to South Bank, the cultural and leisure precinct of the city. Find out more about Brisbane’s vibrant culture by visiting the Queensland Cultural Centre, home to the Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, State Library, Performing Arts Complex, the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and the new Gallery of Modern Art. The Brisbane Powerhouse at New Farm is just a short ferry trip from Gardens Point and features art exhibitions, live music, theatre, comedy, film and more. Great Outdoors Brisbane’s climate lends itself to an outdoor lifestyle and it has plenty of options to soak up the sun all year round. Right alongside the cultural centre at South Bank, and spanning nearly all of the city’s southern riverbank, is South Bank Parklands, an area of riverside boardwalks, rainforest gardens, craft markets, cafés and restaurants, lagoons and a beach. The city Botanic Gardens are positioned right beside QUT, and are an attractive lunch and study spot for students. The Gardens are a perfect place to relax with friends, and for entertainment you can go to the River Stage, a venue for outdoor concerts and big events. In addition to these Gardens, Brisbane has more than 1000 other parks and gardens and over 500 kilometres of bikeways and walking paths. A little further out of the city you can find the Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, including a Japanese garden, a bonsai house and more than 20,000 plants from all over the world. The Mount Coot-tha Botanic gardens also feature a planetarium. Venture further up the mountain and enjoy the best view in Brisbane. The panoramic views of Brisbane city extend to Moreton Bay and is spectacularly lit up at night. Nightlife The Brunswick Street and Chinatown Malls in the centre of Fortitude Valley are renowned for their excellent restaurants and vibrant nightlife. Brisbane has been recognised by US entertainment bible Billboard as one of the world’s top music hotspots, declaring it one of the world’s top five unlikely cities to be spawning exciting new sounds. Brisbane also attracts leading international bands and DJs and has an energetic club culture. Shopping The Queen Street Mall is one of Australia’s most popular shopping destinations with more than 500 stores. It is contemporary, fun and full of entertainment nearly 24-hours a day. Lined with modern stores and malls, pavement cafés and all types of bars and restaurants, the Mall is the hub of activity in the city centre. Fortitude Valley is also home to many independent boutiques and is the perfect destination for those after something different with Brunswick St, Ann St and the Emporium precinct well worth a look. The Brunswick St Mall hosts markets every weekend and you can also find markets at Riverside in the city. Sport Australians love their sport and Brisbane is no different. Home to teams in all four football codes played in Australia (Rugby League, Rugby Union, Aussie Rules and Soccer), a national basketball team and plays regular host to international cricket. If top quality sport is your interest, then Brisbane is a great city to experience Australia’s finest sporting matches.
