Steps to choosing a research program at QUT

Determine your course

QUT offers students a range of different programs:

Honours – QUT offers 12-month honours programs providing the foundation skills to design and undertake research.

Masters by Research – a research masters gives students the chance to pursue a significant piece of supervised research.

Professional Doctorates – these applied doctorates meet the needs of working professionals who want to undertake high-level research that is integrated with their working lives.

Doctor of Philosophy – the PhD challenges students to make a significant and original contribution to knowledge in their field.

Please check the minimum entry requirements for each course and use this as a guide in determining the most appropriate research course.

Contact Relevant Research Staff

You can contact relevant research staff to find out more about the course you wish to undertake and review the details to be provided with your application. For many research applicants this means choosing a topic and selecting a supervisor. However, in some cases you may only be required to identify the appropriate course. In these cases the Faculty will provide you with a coursework outline that will help you to develop your topic and identify your supervisory team at the start of your research studies.

For personal attention you are encouraged to contact the relevant research staff via email:

Choosing a research topic

Faculty staff can help you find an appropriate QUT researcher to discuss your topic with you. That staff member will make sure your topic has the right scope and scale for the research degree you wish to complete. Discussing your interests early will make completing your application and research proposal much easier.

To get a feel for QUT's research you can visit our Areas of Expertise, which provides an overview of various research areas, including web resources and key contacts. Alternatively you can visit the Australian Digital Thesis to see completed theses by past QUT Research Students.

The Faculty of Health has the Student Training and Research Topics (START) Database to help you search for available research projects and supervisors in your area of interest.

You can also view current Research Student Projects from the Faculty of Science and Technology. This resource gives a succinct overview of research areas and makes it simple to contact potential supervisors.

Find a supervisor

To find an appropriate supervisor browse QUT's online expert database. The expert database allows you to search for staff by name or area of expertise. It includes phone, fax and email contact details. If you are not sure of a specific topic, the research interests of staff may provide a useful guide to focusing your options.

Because not all staff are listed in the expert database, it is wise to also contact the relevant faculty research office directly to discuss your interests.
