If you have what it takes to succeed, then a QUT research degree will help you turn your abilities into a tool to build or enhance your career.

At QUT we know that research students thrive when they have a topic they are passionate about, a supervisory team who supports their learning, and a cutting-edge research environment that challenges their thinking.

Steps to studying research at QUT

STEP 1.
View possible research scholarships

Before you begin your information search you may wish to view our scholarships page or our international scholarships page to determine whether you could apply for a research scholarship.

STEP 2.
Determine your course

QUT offers students a range of different programs:

Honours - QUT offers 12-month honours programs providing the foundation skills to design and undertake research.

Masters by Research - a research masters gives students the chance to pursue a significant piece of supervised research.

Professional Doctorates - these applied doctorates meet the needs of working professionals who want to undertake high-level research that is integrated with their working lives.

Doctor of Philosophy - the PhD challenges students to make a significant and original contribution to knowledge in their field.

Please check the minimum entry requirements for each course and use this as a guide in determining the most appropriate research course. See our Research Postgraduate Course Information page for more details.

STEP 3.
Contact Relevant Research Staff

You can contact relevant research staff to find out more about the course you wish to undertake and review the details to be provided with your application. For many research applicants this means choosing a topic and selecting a supervisor. However, in some cases you may only be required to identify the appropriate course. In these cases the Faculty will provide you with a coursework outline that will help you to develop your topic and identify your supervisory team at the start of your research studies.

For personal attention you are encouraged to contact the relevant research staff via email:

If you are unsure of which faculty may be relevant to you, or have more questions about admission, enrolment or scholarships please make an online enquiry or email qut.international@qut.edu.au.

STEP 4.
Choosing a research topic

Faculty staff can help you find an appropriate QUT researcher to discuss your topic with you. That staff member will make sure your topic has the right scope and scale for the research degree you wish to complete. Discussing your interests early will make completing your application and research proposal much easier. To get a feel for QUT's research areas you can visit QUT ePrints, which is a web-based deposit collection of academic papers that showcases the research outputs of QUT academic staff and postgraduate students or the Australian Digital Thesis to see completed theses by past QUT Research Students or view current research strengths .

STEP 5.
Find a supervisor

To find an appropriate supervisor browse QUT's online media expertise database or view current research strengths. The media expertise database allows you to search for staff by name or area of expertise. It includes phone, fax and email contact details. If you are not sure of a specific topic, the research interests of staff may provide a useful guide to focusing your options.

Because not all staff are listed in the media database, it is wise to also contact the relevant faculty research office directly to discuss your interests.

STEP 6.
Apply to QUT

Once you have selected a topic and found a supervisor you are ready to submit an application. See our Application and Enrolment website for more details. This site also includes details on coming to QUT as an exchange or external student.

STEP 7.

Browse our Course and Fees list to determine the fee rates for international research students.
