Parisian-inspired designs reach height of fashion

With a collection inspired by Parisian 'haute couture', a QUT honours student has made his own fashion statement by winning the inaugural Australian Fashion Graduate of the Year Award at the recent Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival.

Nicholas Wilsdon has been hailed as Brisbane's next style leader as he follows in the creative footsteps of other successful QUT fashion graduates, including George Wu, who are making waves on catwalks across the globe.

The 21-year-old's winning collection La Metamorpheuse reflects timeless style from the original Parisian fashion houses, and not the many outlandish and unwearable designs which have come to be associated with 'haute couture' in recent decades.

"The couture industry of Paris in the early 20th century designed lavish, yet comfortable, clothing that was made to last," Nicholas said.

"The clothing could be passed down through generations and could be recut to fit different bodies because there was always enough fabric in the garments.

"However in the last 20 years, 'haute couture' has come to be about making a spectacle at fashion shows."

Nicholas said he reinterpreted classic designs with flattering cuts for stylishly inclined women of any age.

"My clothes document experience and the passing of time, from youth and teenage rebellion as well as the mysteries of feminine sensuality," Nicholas said.

Student support among best: Peak student body
QUT has come up trumps in the latest rankings from Australia’s peak student body.

The National Union of Students (NUS) findings put QUT at the forefront of student service provision in three key areas: quality of student life and support on campus, advocacy services, and the university’s level of consultation with students.

Michael Nguyen, President of the NUS, said the new rankings should play a significant role in a student’s decision to attend an institution because they provide an alternative rating from the student’s perspective.

“These rankings are designed to provide students with information that will assist them in making a decision about which university to apply for,” he said.

The results confirm QUT’s commitment to provide a comprehensive range of services for all students.
