| Queensland researchers to enjoy close ties with Europe |
|
A Queensland University of Technology researcher has been instrumental in linking Queensland researchers to the entire European research community, with support from the Queensland Government and European Union. Prof. Michael Schuetz, Chair in Traumatology, initiated the Queensland-European Research Collaborations Initiative (QERCI), which was launched in May by the Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, the Ambassador of the European Commission to Australia and New Zealand, Bruno Julien, and the Ambassador of Germany, Martin Lutz. Prof. Schuetz said all Queensland universities would be involved and the network would help improve linkages through more collaborations and postgraduate student exchanges between Queensland and Europe. Premier Beattie said there are already existing research networks like the Forum for Europe-Australia Science and Technology Cooperation (FEAST) linking Australia to Europe, however, this is the first time Queensland has forged links with the European research community as a whole. "QERCI will help Queensland researchers make the right connections with their European counterparts and facilitate European alliances. It will also offer Queensland industry a strong competitive advantage by providing access to complimentary skills and resources in the development of new technologies," he said. EU Ambassador Bruno Julien congratulated the Queensland Government’s foresight in capitalising on the close Europe-Australia links and said international collaboration is essential in combating the challenges of today. “We need to use our scientific and technological skills to meet our political, social, economic and humanitarian commitments such as ensuring sustainable development, combating climate change, safeguarding biodiversity and fulfilling our Millennium Development Goals,” he said. Queensland researchers have already been collaborating with their European counterparts across a range of topics, from clean coal technology through to medical research.
QERCI will convene quarterly to facilitate interaction across sectors, academia and agencies, addressing key Smart State Sectors such as water, energy and health.
