Education innovator Mr Wang Bintai has been recognised for his distinguished service and community contribution, being awarded the title of Doctor of the University, QUT’s highest honorary award.
For the past five years as Director General of the Jiangsu Provincial Education Department (JED), Mr Wang has been responsible for leading many reforms of the education system, making Jiangsu one of the top educational provinces in China.
“Mr Wang has supported the opening of the education system and the introduction of modern curriculum, teaching methods and staff professional development,” said Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake.
“In particular he has contributed to the growth of the English language in Jiangsu through his encouragement of teachers to become bilingual,” he said.
Fostering the growth in teacher training programs within QUT's Faculty of Education, Mr Wang was instrumental in 250 Jiangsu Master of Education students undertaking their studies at QUT.
“A total number of more that 930 teachers from Jiangsu Province have been trained through the centre and this year the first cohort of Masters Education TESOL students have begun their course," said Mr Wang.
Under Mr Wang's leadership, young people of Jiangsu have been provided with an increasing number of opportunities for further education in professional and technical skills.
Mr Wang Bintai was awarded the honorary doctorate at a ceremony held on March 5 in Brisbane, Australia. At the same ceremony, the Brisbane Consulate General for China presented QUT with books and materials for the Mandarin Chinese Program in QUT's Faculty of Business Languages' Centre.
