Enjoy free Australia Day celebrations at South Bank in Brisbane
Australia Day on January 26 marks a special date on the calendar when residents and visitors alike come together to celebrate ‘all things Aussie’.
The public holiday traditionally honours Australia’s people, land, diversity, sense of a fair go, lifestyle, democracy and personal freedoms, and this year Queenslanders will be able to celebrate the Aussie lifestyle with free events all day at the South Bank Parklands.
You can swim, dance, be entertained, learn and create during a jam-packed program of events, performances and activities at South Bank.
The flag raising ceremony begins at 11am on Saturday, and will showcase the Australian Defence Force Military Honour Guard, the Royal Australian Artillery Band - Brisbane and the raising of the Australian, Queensland, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.
The ceremony will include a F-111 fighter jet flyover at South Bank Cultural Forecourt and a traditional 21-gun salute that will be fired from Roma Street Parkland at 12 noon.
The Suncorp Piazza will come alive as some of Queensland's most talented and colourful community groups take to the stage where you can learn some great Bollywood moves and be dazzled by the beats of the award winning Ferny Grove Percussion Ensemble.
Fireworks will light up the Brisbane night sky from 7.30-7.45pm in a stirring display of light, colour and sound, which will be followed by the free Australia Day Concert in the Suncorp Piazza, featuring Aria Award-winning performer Josh Pyke and supported by local Brisbane band, The Zebras.
