Daunted about sharing accommodation for the first time? Not sure how to find a place to live in an unfamiliar city? Wondering how much you need to budget?
These are all questions students ask before moving to Australia, and it’s good to know what to expect before you arrive.
QUT’s Accommodation Officer Nazrin Rashid helps international students to find accommodation in Brisbane every day.
QUT has an airport pickup service to assist students on arrival and Nazrin recommends students book temporary accommodation at a backpacker or hotel from QUT’s recommended list, for their first few days in the city. Nazrin also suggests:
- Attend the ‘Discover Brisbane’ sessions which covers orientation, transport, living in Brisbane and studying at QUT. The accommodation team will advise you how to get assistance in searching accommodation, the different types of accommodation you may encounter, leases, bonds and your obligations as a tenant.
- Visit the accommodation team at the East West Centre at Gardens Point campus to see what longer term accommodation is available. The accommodation office has comprehensive information regarding accommodation currently available for students.
- Browse websites such as www.realestate.com.au and www.seqrents.com.au for share accommodation and renting out units or houses.
- The accommodation team can assist you in making appointments to view properties. They can drive you there if it’s not within walking distance, or arrange for the lessor/agent to pick you up. You should make appointments through the East West Centre.
- Always look at a place in person - not just on the internet - before agreeing to rent as often adverts on the internet don’t live up to expectations.
The accommodation website has information such as budgeting, e.g. rental for a two-bedroom unit plus food, transport, electricity, gas, telephone and educational costs comes to about $235 per week.
Nazrin said it is important to remember that QUT is a city-based campus so students wanting accommodation within walking distance need to pay more that the outer suburbs. Sharing in the city averages $160 and above for rent, while a one-bedroom unfurnished apartment averages $280. It’s important to be prepared so check the out the accommodation website for more helpful information. |
