Veronika gets physical with human movement studies at QUT

By Michelle Mills

If you love sports, getting active and interacting with people, yet despair at the thought of sitting at a desk all day, then a career in human movement studies might be for you.

For Faculty of Health student Veronika Larisova, the practical approach of QUT’s Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement Studies) was the perfect choice, with her dreams of pursuing a career in the sports industry.

Veronika, from the Czech Republic, plans on working as a exercise physiologist or personal trainer and said she enjoyed her studies at QUT because the course was very “hands on”.

“There are a lot of practical exercises, especially the three-month full-time work placement that was part of my course,” she said. “It allowed me to network and gain a lot of practical skills.”

“I definitely liked the practicals most. I’ve done four different work placements in four different areas as part of my course, so I could see what I really wanted to do because there’s a wide range of career options.”

Veronika’s varied practicums included working as a personal trainer and self-defence instructor at a martial arts gym, working with a physiotherapist helping others recover from injury, working at a sports conditioning institution, and working for three months as a cardiac scientist at the Gold Coast hospital.

She also enjoyed the four-year course because of the positive exchange between staff and students.

“A lot of the teachers are in the industry, so they could tell us their experiences from the job. The lecturers are really friendly and staff at the Faculty of Health are really good,” she said.

Away from her studies, Veronika has embraced the warm Queensland climate to enjoy her favourite outdoor sports, including rollerblading, running, waterskiing and swimming.

More information on this course can be found at the School of Human Movement Studies in the Faculty of Health.
