Student Exchange: Louie globalises his degree in Singapore
By Michelle Mills, QUT Journalism Student

Did you know international students are eligible to spend a semester overseas as part of their QUT degree?

For Hong Kong student Samuel Leung Louie, studying at QUT gave him the opportunity to study not only business in Australia, but in Singapore as well.

Louie is a final year business student majoring in finance. He enjoyed learning firsthand about another Asian tiger economy when he spent a semester as an exchange student at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

“My lecturer gave me knowledge about Singapore’s development and financial markets,” he said.

“While Hong Kong focuses on enticing companies from China to enlist, Singapore focuses on South East Asia and is now shifting to companies in India and the Middle East.”

While receiving valuable advice and learning about another business culture which complemented his business degree, Louie loved the student life at NTU.

“I had a German roommate and there were always lots of activities organised. We went on a night safari and also visited the different cultural areas such as Little India, Arab Street, Chinatown and Katong, the Malaysian area,” he said.

Having become used to the Australian culture and studying in Brisbane, he felt like he represented both countries.

“Whenever I introduced myself as an exchange student in Singapore, I didn’t know whether to say I was from Hong Kong or Australia,” he said.

“Other students at NTU were always interested to know that even though I was from Hong Kong and studied in Australia, I could still do a semester in Singapore.”

Back in Australia, Louie likes living in Brisbane because he said it is not too crowded or noisy.

He is a big fan of lazing at the beach on the weekends, playing basketball every Saturday and having a BBQ party with his friends.
