Cheung Kong scholarships encourage cultural exchange between Australia and Asia

By Michelle Mills

Several QUT students were among scholarship recipients honoured at a special reception at Queensland Parliament in July.

The reception was held for the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Scholarship Programme, which supports educational exchanges between Australian and Asian universities.

QUT students Rhiannon Yarrow and Haibei Luo were joined on stage by Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, Di Weddell from the Department of Education, Science and Training and Mr H. L. Kam from Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings, to speak about the special programme.

Mr Kam said the scholarship’s motto “learning has no boundaries” was reflected by the awarding of 200 scholarships this year to encourage cross-cultural education.

The $5000 scholarships are awarded to both domestic students going to Asia and Asian students coming to Australia.

The QUT students praised the Cheung Kong programme for the opportunity to study a semester overseas, while learning about a new culture and expanding their perspectives.

Public Relations student Rhiannon Yarrow was excited about her upcoming exchange to Hong Kong and said it provided the opportunity to network with international business circles.

“I am looking forward to being able to fully immerse myself in the local culture and life as a student in Hong Kong and to explore and become part of a vibrant and business-savvy community,” she said.

Chinese student Haibei Luo from Zhejiang University, who studies Business at QUT, said she was impressed with Australians' respect for the environment and had learnt a lot about the local wildlife.

The students were awarded plaques in recognition of their achievements and posed for photos with the Queensland Premier.

QUT welcomes new Peace Scholars from Chile and Mexico

Students from Chile and Mexico have commenced studies at QUT this semester as recipients of the Peace Scholarship Program.

Anna Lee Mraz Bartra and Maria Fernanda Mujica Azuara from Mexico and Farid Hidalgo and Valeska Maldonado from Chile were chosen for their commitment to building global peace and understanding through their community, academic and professional achievements.

The Peace Scholarship Program is managed by IDP Education, and since 2004, scholarships to 212 students from ten countries have been awarded.

The program was initiated following the September 11 attacks and promotes cultural exchange and understanding.

Studying in Australia through the Peace Scholarship Program is a special opportunity for the recipients, and the students are encouraged to pass on their experiences and knowledge to their home communities when they return.
